The jargon, decoded

Nobody should be able to upsell you using vocabulary you don’t have. Here’s what the words on the box actually mean.

Force feedback (and why rumble isn’t it)

Force feedback means a motor actively turns the wheel against your hands. When the car loses grip, the wheel goes light. When you hit a kerb, it kicks. You feel what the car is doing, which is how you learn to drive fast.

Rumble is just vibration — the same thing a controller does. Cheap wheels marketed as “vibration feedback” are not force feedback wheels. This is the most common way beginners get disappointed.

The one-line test

If the box doesn’t say “force feedback,” it doesn’t have it. A wheel without it is not a cheaper way into sim racing; it’s a different and much worse thing.

Nm — how strong the wheel is

Newton-metres measure how hard the wheel can push back. Entry wheels are around 2.3 Nm (Logitech G29/G920/G923). Entry direct drive is 5–8 Nm. Serious kit is 11 Nm and up.

More isn’t automatically better. 2.3 Nm is genuinely enough to learn on and plenty for a desk mount — a strong wheel bolted to a flexy desk just shakes the desk.

Gear, belt, direct drive

  • Gear driven — plastic gears between motor and wheel. Cheapest, noisiest, slightly notchy. Perfectly good to start. (G29, G920.)
  • Belt driven — a rubber belt instead. Smoother and quieter. (T300RS.)
  • Hybrid — both. (T128, T248.)
  • Direct drive — the wheel bolts straight to the motor. No gears, no belt, nothing between you and the detail. Best feel, most expensive, and needs a properly rigid mount.

The difference between drive types is something you feel through your hands, not something you read on a spec sheet.

Load cell brake — the one worth understanding

A normal pedal measures how far you push it. A load cell measures how hard you push it.

That matters because real brakes work on pressure. Your muscles are far better at repeating a pressure than a distance, so a load cell makes braking dramatically more consistent — and consistency is lap time. It is the most-recommended upgrade in sim racing for a reason.

Entry wheels don’t include one. You can add one later, either by buying better pedals or modifying the ones you have.

Rotation (900°, 1080°)

How far the wheel turns lock to lock. Real road cars are around 900°. Racing cars are less. Any decent wheel does 900°, and games adjust it per car anyway. Not something to choose a wheel over.

Words that mean nothing

  • “Racing grade” — not a standard. Means nothing.
  • “Pro” — a marketing word, not a specification.
  • “Compatible with all consoles” — treat with heavy suspicion. See the compatibility page.
