The short version
A racing wheel is licensed for PlayStation or Xbox. Almost never both. It’s not a technical limit — the hardware is often identical. It’s a business arrangement: Sony and Microsoft each require a licensing chip in any wheel that talks to their console.
This is why the Logitech G29 and G920 are physically the same wheel, cost the same $299.99, and are not interchangeable. And why the Thrustmaster T248 costs $329.99 for PlayStation but $349.99 for Xbox — that $20 is the licence.
If you buy the wrong version, no cable, dongle, or firmware update will make it work. Products that claim otherwise generally either don’t work or risk your console account. Check twice, buy once.
PC is the exception. Almost every wheel here works on PC regardless of which console it’s licensed for.

Prices are manufacturer list prices. Shops are often cheaper. The Fanatec CSL DD price shown is the bundle with a wheel and pedals — the cheaper number you’ll see advertised is the base alone, which you cannot use on its own.
Three traps
- “Base only” pricing. Direct-drive wheels are often advertised at a price that includes no wheel rim and no pedals. Always check what’s actually in the box.
- The shifter isn’t included. On the G29 and G920 it’s a separate $59.99. Paddles work fine to start.
- Fanatec on PlayStation. The CSL DD cannot be made PlayStation-compatible at any price. If you have a PS5, you need the GT DD Pro instead.
